René Girard
Florilegia Talk, Scapegoating, 1994
This is a talk that Réne Girard gave in 1994 in
California, organized by Florilegia Institute (Gil Bailie's
organization). The talk describes in clear terms the role of the Bible
in revealing the scapegoating mechanism as it has moderated violence,
generated myths, and created victims. A few questions follow the talk
(starting around minute 57), each one leading to important elaborations.
Among the important points that are brought out is the fact that
whenever scapegoating truly works it is never recognized as such by the
participants. Similarly, if you ask people whether or not scapegoating
occurs in their world (such as their workplace), they will unanimously
say "yes." But if you ask the same people if they are guilty of
scapegoating others, they will say "no."
